To amplify the voices of the vulnerable, the marginalized and the excluded.

Consumers will have the chance to get in the know on why they pay the prices they do for fuel and how they can influence those costs, thanks to a webinar organised by the CARICOM Secretariat with support from PANOS Caribbean and New Energy Events.

The webinar — titled “Energy Pricing: My Fuel Costs” — will take place via this link,, this Wednesday, November 16, at 9:30 AM – 11.00 AM EST.

“This knowledge webinar provides an opportunity for citizens within the Caribbean Community to gain some level of insight into such issues as: (1) the causes of fuel (such as diesel and gasoline) price change over time; (2) where the money that is paid for a litre (or gallon) of fuel really goes; and (3) what it is that consumers are actually paying for,” said Dr. Devon Gardner, Head of the Energy Unit at the CARICOM Secretariat.

“For those who often wonder why the savings from the lower global price of crude oil is not been directly passed onto consumers at the pumps as readily as they expect them to, this session is definitely for them,” he added.

The event is the first in a series of knowledge webinars and among a slate of other activities being put on as part of CARICOM Energy Month, which is being celebrated under the theme “Sustainable Energy for Sustainable Development”.

The activities — including a regional news reporting competition and photo, video and innovation competitions targeting a wide cross-section of actors from the region — are intended to inspire the interest of Caribbean people in energy matters while helping them to understand its place in their development.

This is amidst a changing climate, which threatens to impair island economies, most of which are burdened by the high cost of energy that limit the economic growth that is necessary for their sustainable development.
