The Rights of the Child PSAs PART I – PANOS CARIBBEAN’s ST. LUCIA YOUTH JOURNALISM GROUP

Young people from St. Lucia speak out about the rights of children and young people in this attention grabbing short Public Service Announcement that is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The PSAs are productions developed by the young people as part of Youth Journalism training by Panos Caribbean funded by the Commonwealth Foundation and Panos Global AIDS Programme (GAP).

Panos Caribbean’s Youth Journalism programme aims to empower youth to advocate effectively on issues that affect them by utilizing the media. The organisation’s Youth Journalism Programme “Our Own Voices — Youth Communicating Through the Media” targeted 20 youth aged 12 to 16 in S. Lucia who are marginalized or vulnerable but possess strong leadership and communication skills and trained them to become effective communicators and youth advocates utilizing five interlinked approaches.

Panos Caribbean- Real People, Real Voices

Panos Caribbean will commemorate 25 years of working in the Caribbean in June this year. As part of its activities to mark this significant achievement, the organization has released a short video: “Real People, Real Voices!” which explores some of Panos Caribbean’s recent activities and achievement.

Since its inception in 1986, Panos Caribbean has been working to help empower the most marginalized and vulnerable persons in the region through projects and other activities on issues related to children and youth, public health, media community & environment as well as gender. There is a lot that we have been able to achieve over the past 25 years and some of our work and beneficiaries are highlighted in the video: “Real People, Real Voices!” which echoes Panos Caribbean’s tagline and motto.

Street Boys of Jamaica – Part I – Risk Factors of Street Boys in Kingson, Jamaica for HIV/AIDS

CHILDREN YOUNG PEOPLE have rights! The rights to speak about issues that concern them and affect them and they have the right to be listened to and have those issues addressed.

This video takes an overall look at the issue of street boys in Kingston, Jamaica and their risk and vulnerability to contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The voices of authority figures are also in this video and includes their perspectives on what government and civil society are doing to address the problem.

Panos Caribbean, with the aid of our development partners including Caribbean media, is ensuring that the voices of children and young people of the Caribbean are HEARD!

The rights of children are outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Child and we work with regional media to ensure that those rights are realized.

This video was produced by journalist Kalilah Enriquez of CVM Television under a Media Fellowship awarded by Panos Caribbean and funded by the Panos Global AIDS Programme.
